6-11: National Trails Day 2011
National Trails Day 2011 is Saturday June 4.
The Trails Day brochure is available online in electronic form at http://www.ctwoodlands.org/CT-TrailsDay2011. There are now 190 events planned across the state for Trails Day!
LCRVHC's meeting time is 8:00 am. Melissa will be there for set-up between 7-7:30 and will have all the tools and our new Muck Truck. Folks should bring work gloves, bug spray, water, and be prepared to get dirty!
We will be working on a section of the new Rocky Road trail that Bryan and the guys from CT-NEMBA have gotten approval for. The trail section in question is shown on the DEP maps as the un-blazed trail on the western boundary of the forest that begins at the north end of Pattaconk reservoir and ends on Old County Road. At the fork just south of Old County Road, the trail will take the western fork. Bryan and CT-NEMBA have gotten the go ahead from DEP for the trail which in its entirety will go south down the west side of the reservoir (also currently un-blazed) before turning east and connecting with the current “White Triangle” blazed trail. Check out some of the work they’ve been doing on their blog.

10-09: ATVs cause injuries on the Larkin State Bridle Trail
On October 11th 2009, Jody Dardis was riding her horse along the Larkin Bridle Trail when two ATVs entered the trail from a side path, directly in front of Jody. Jody’s horse spooked, she became unseated and hit the ground. The ATVs did not stop, although they saw Jody fall from her horse, they left her there.
One of our own Volunteer Horse Patrol (VHP) members, Ken (Kowboy Ken) Forcier was also on the trail that day. Kowboy Ken encountered the same two ATVs further down the trail as they fled the scene of the crime. The ATVs did not stop or even slow down, one shouting to the other to “Just Keep Going!”
Luckily, Kowboy Ken was able to keep his horse under control as the two ATVs sped by. Kowboy Ken continued down the trail where he encountered Jody, who was on the ground seriously injured. Kowboy Ken called 911 which brought the local Resident State Trooper and an ambulance.
Jody was hospitalized for five days due the serious nature of her multiple injuries. While Jody was in the hospital, she lost her job as a nanny of twins. Jody’s injuries will require months of healing and physical therapy. Among the injuries Jody sustained was a broken arm which required the insertion of a steel rod. Hopefully Jody will regain her full range of motion in that arm. Jody’s son has been doing all the horse-keeping as she still has difficulty moving about freely.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is investigating the incident and has been patrolling the Larkin Trail on foot and with DEP ATVs. The DEP officers could use any information other trail users or neighboring property owners might provide.
The Connecticut Horse Council is offering a $500.00 Cash Reward for information leading to the arrest of the operators of the ATVs. If you have any information please call the DEP Hotline 860-424-3333.
If you would like to help Jody in any way, local VHP member Alesia DiFederico is coordinating donations of hay. Alesia can be reached at: stoneoaks@charter.net or 203-509-6603
Jody could use hay and any monetary donations folks might offer. A Paypal account for receiving funds has been started. The Paypal account is j.dobbins89@snet.net
Please help Jody have a happier holiday season by making a donation. No amount is too small!
Remember, this could have been any one of us! Thank you in advance for your support.
Donations Needed For Abandoned Horse Care
My name is Leiah and I have been a club member for about 3 years. I board my thoroughbred at Joanne Minion's place. We have an elderly horse there named "Nikki". Nikki's former owner gave him up do to financial problems. Nikki is 38 years old and still going strong. Nikki faced euthanasia last month because no one could care for him. I couldn't let this jolly guy be put down just because he wasn't wanted anymore.
I have been paying an extra $100 toward his care, on top of my other horse's board. Due to my own income, I just can't afford him by myself. Nikki can not eat hay due to his old teeth, so he eats a pelleted hay called hay stretcher. His best friend is my horse, "Whisper" and they are pastured together.
I am taking donations at my work for Nikki and people have been wonderful. I am putting the money strictly towards Nikki's care and food. I am looking for more donations to help me keep this guy around. If you can make a donation please contact me at luvit1982@yahoo.com. Thank You.
Sincerely,
Leiah Nuzzo
